Make A Difference!
It is very true that it is easy to get away with things when no one is watching. The same is true in the Starke County Political Scene. When no one attends meetings, it is even easier. So? perhaps today at 3:45 PM there is the last Starke County Commissioners meeting for the year of 2008. So, today it might be Make a Difference Day in Starke County-

Interesting Interesting Interesting... so we have a meeting for this afternoon? Can someone please verify this for me? I'd love to spread the word, because I'm sure many are very unaware of this.
The Commissioner's always meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month. That has never been a secret.
Why couldn't the meeting be later, when everyone is off work?! I pray CNN and FoxNews investigates; Starke County is the laughingstock of the state!

Well pardon me for not knowing when the Commissioners meet.. GEEZ. I guess I didn't have as much interest in their meetings as I do now, after finding out all this disturbing information on them. I find it a little odd though that they do meet at 3:45? pretty convienant huh, most people aren't off work yet to sit in and listen? Isn't that strange. You know apparently it's open to the public, yet, it's at a time no one can attend. Why not make a motion to the County Government to get this switched around? We're going under in this county and it's not even funny anymore... anywhere from the school board not being able to hire a superintendant--what's wrong with Monster for crying out loud. We have to hire an "agency" to select someone? Waste Waste Waste of money. Apparently our tax dollars are hard to work, and the result... nada. zilch... no superintendant and the school year is half way over now.
what do you feel is a good time and why
Apparently, per the blogs on WSBT news, there are many people who have had an increased interest in what in the world is going on with this county and are not liking the direction we are headed. I would propose local media taking poll from the citizens of Starke county themselves on a more convienant time for the county to be able to attend. Most people have to work until I would guess at least 4:30-ish. My suggestion would be around 6:30 in the evening. However, I'm not speaking for our county as a whole. I think it's important to involve the community and "advertise" this meeting a little more considering the circumstances currently and to be able to work around work schedules. I know they vote themselves on items, but what was recently voted on was just plain wrong. Any man that has been charged with more than one felony count, should be temporarily removed from the seat until convicted or not. I'd even be so bold and favorable to say continue pay, but the opinions of this person and vote should not be counted- because he could very well be facing major conviction. I'm sure if the room was full of people objecting to that idea, it wouldn't have passed so easily as it did.
Alot of people in this community and the media are the same.On saturday Abate and friends of abate had their toys for tots at the basslake golf course.All the local Papers and channels 16,22 and 28 were notified and asked to attend.Of all the reporters invited one showed up and he was 90 minutes late.they gave away about 150 bicycles over 100 turkeys and lots of boxes of presents to needy families.this was a very good cause and something positive for the community but could not get any news coverage but if its something negative all the media and citizens are all over it.so if you are only going too zero in on the negative aspects of the county and not help out with anything positive then just maybe you are part of the problem.
Former govenor Frank O'Banion was here in Starke county. Where was the media, TV stations, etc. No, it wasn't a murder or drama. That's all there interested in to continue sterotyping Starke County.

Very true about the negative aspects and their coverage. Their should be some reform and things need to change. The Business as usual needs to stop. The only way to stop it is by correcting the problem. The first step in correcting the problem (on the negative stuff) is people start getting active and showing up at the meetings. The second step will be restoring our credibility in the media. - this step will take time as will eliminating the good ole boy system
The third step will be taking pride in our county and supporting it. Then, and only then, will groups get the overwhelming support they deserve to be successful.
doesnt anyone remember our old mayor Nancy D. all the money she stoled from the school yrs ago, and rich daddy got her out of it? then the idiots in starke county to this day continue on to vote for her. lol
Ah, I have returned. I am truly pleased to have seen you have decided to put a poll up. Just as I thought, although not many have voted, those that have, all agree with me. A better time is in the evening when more can be in attendance. It is ashame that our county doesn't want to get involved as much as we need to- to help further avoid issues, misconduct, etc. We've been "promised" by our future seat holder that a "code of ethics" will go into play? Seriously, do you think this will solve the current problem? The bottom line is that it's plain and simple... this act has already been committed. This man should no longer be able to sit and have his opinion recognized when he faces charges such as those he is. If he's facing charges of felonies.. don't you agree, that's pretty serious. We're not talking he littered at Taco Bell.. we're talking he is possibly facing years in jail??!!! This man should be temporarily removed- simple as that.
One thing we have in our legal system is the right to a speedy trial. Mark should consider stepping aside until his criminal issues are resolved. As for a policy on a code of ethics... That will be nice. However.. We already have laws on the books that address conflict of interest. Such rules are only worth anything if they are Consistently enforced. The big problem with such ethics would be is that someone can get into trouble and reflect back and say.... Remember when so and so did this way back when..? They didnt get into trouble for overcharging the county for paving..How come I am getting in trouble for selling a back hoe for a ridiculous price!
Instead of writing rules, the easier method would be hire an outside consulting firm to measure our current county operation. An audit of this sort will show where we are efficient and where we are not! Release the findings and set those findings as benchmarks so that office holders can show improvement or declines in their performance. Show how often they show up at meeting etc.

Mark Milo said the carpet is coming up in different offices in the annex. Kevin said that James Coad, Annex Custodian, has been unable to get a quote. He thinks it will probably need to be paid from the Cumulative Capital Development Fund. Kevin suggested that they put it out for bid next year and then go to the council for appropriations.
Hmmm Mark is worried about carpet now? Shouldnt he be worried about something else?
No hes not worried, one bit. He knows he will get off of these charges and you all know it too.
Is anyone in office really listening?? Your poll shows that people are wanting a 7 PM meeting. The City of Knox meets at 7. Will the county also? It also shows that most people think Chambers cheated. Will the ISP really step in? The last one says that no 2009 raises should be given. I'll put money on it that Knox approves raises next week and that the county will get good size raises also. Just watch. Most of our public officials just don't care. Next time, vote them out and put new ones in that do want to make a difference. Start watching now and see who's stepping up to do things to help the community and if they run, vote for them.
Why would you want to set bench marks to rate performance. A report like that would show that the county has all relatives working in it

What are they going to court for on dec.23? anyone know, anyone gonna be there.
They are going to court on the 23rd because they have been charged, this will likely set the trial date or even go to trial, they have opted or a jury trial rather than a bench trial.
And yes, I do check the other threads on this site.

I did the same thing and saw no letters at all.
I know I know, I'm sorry guys. He was supposed to post a letter from someone I know very closely regarding the Milo case. I was very disappointed in John Reed for not publishing this letter for this week, as he stated he should've been able to. Trust me guys, be on the watch for it.. all of those wanting to see Milo get what he deserves, will enjoy this. I've read the rough draft- I guess we'll see how much John Reed "edits" for his purposes. So sorry about you spending the money, we were told it was submitted in time for post this week.
Thanks for letting us know that it wasn't published..... Reed does that crap a lot from what I have seen. He has no problem posting HIS opinion in his column but heaven forbid someone elses OPINION letter get posted.
Terry and John need to realize that the days of newspapers are numbered. The Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News will stop home delivery most days and focus on an Internet edition to cut costs as newspaper industry advertising continues a downward spiral, They are going to only to deliver on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. This is expected to start in the first quarter of 2009. Many other struggling newspapers will follow.

They should look into hamlet.The same thing went on there.The street supervisor and the ex town marshal (who we will just call stinky ron)did the same thing with the scrap.When they did the upgrades on the sewer plant they took all the scrap hauled it in the towns truck to a local scrap yard and told the people there to make the tickets out to cash and then split the money.And this was a cop and town employee.This should be looked into.But i think our prosecutor picks and chooses who she prosecutes.It depends on what your last name is as too how much you get away with.
Anon, ur right! they need to look into Hamlet! That is true about the street superintendent. He also done side work while on town time. He paintid them farm wagins for mantena on town time. The clerk Neva, smokes and sells pot too thats why she aint at the town hall every day. All the cops from hamlet are dirty. Ed and his boys use 2 steal with the town credit card by puttin gas in there own cars, buying cigarettes, and food. They use police cars for their personel use. Frank use to threten women for sex, Ron is a perv, and Jerimeha likes to be petty and pull you over for nothing. Thats why the town is broke
Word is the new commissioners will meet on Jan 2 at 10 am then recess until Monday, Jan 5th at 5 pm. Let's see if it's advertised.
There are other things going on in Starke County. why not discuss some of those issues too.

The new Commissioners are having the first meeting on 1-2-08 at 10 am otherwise I believe at this time they will remain the first and third monday of the month at 3:45PM
other than that this is my 2 cents : I go to alot (not all) commissioner and council meetings and I do not always see alot of people there these are open to the public, so public if you have questions or comments go to the meetings!
oh the council meets on the 2nd monday at 7pm.
There is talk of putting the meetings together once a month next year, but as of now that is just talk.

Seriously, now we're thinking it's better to meet at 10 am?? People please, can we not make reference to the lovely poll our site leaders have posted. Clearly, you are all in agreement with me. We WANT A LATER MEETING TIME.. This last person states that they go to the meetings and none of "us" writing are there. Let's see, I believe my key agrument is... no one can make those meetings, they are set at a horrible time when the majority of us living in the county are at work! I work outside of Starke County... I leave my house at 7 am and I don't get home until just after 5. Is it feasible to take a day off of work to attend this meeting? NOOO. I think it's important to spread the information that's posted here to the "leaders" of this down spiral county, and let them know there are people that actually do want to get involved, that actually care about this county they reside in and that they are simply making it hard to. I still think that if there were a room full of people groaning and complaining, and voicing concern, half of this crap wouldn't get passed so quickly. Especially allowing Milo to stay in his seat. Granted, I know there's no law stating that he can't sit there, but come on... we see the picture, you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. This whole thing still angers me. He's been charged with something directly related to the seat he sits in.... people come on.

I understand your frustration with our local officials and I share the same sentiments. I am working on something big and I intend to bring it all to light when the time is right.
Well I look forward to hearing this or finding out exactly what it is you are working on. I do recall reading something John Reed posted about FBI involvement? It sounds to me like there are some SERIOUS things going on behind closed doors that hopefully will eventually be brought to light. We just all hope that once they are brought to light, justice gets served on them... *can you hear it, the rug is being lifted up and someone's grabbing the broom to sweep it under there* like every other thing lately in this area. It's almost the laughing stock around here.. I tell people some of the things going on and their amazement is more on how the lack of severity with the judicial system is.

Not necessarily "anonymous"... it's called getting your facts straight and your ducks in a row. You have to make sure you have every piece of the puzzle complete before you go framing it for display.. am I right? Key word is, he/she said, "working on"... not completed, not finished, but working on. There's quite a few I think that are trying to dive in and take action... it's just all about timing and making sure you have everything ready to go.
Last week's Leader had in the "heard on the streets" column: the FBI is investigating something, somewhere in our county government? Hoo-ray! It's time to clean house big time.

I go to work everyday as part of my job i have to take a drug test.it seems to me most of the people here get disabiility checks (more than i make working)and their main goal in life is waiting by the mailbox for the next government check so they can go buy weed. this is unfair to working people i think they need to drug test these people!
I Agree with the last post.Anyone getting welfare,foodstamps,disability or any form of government checks should be drug tested.If they are on disability for being obese they should have too have the stomach surgery.Too many free rides.

Sounds like many of you are way over qualified for your own jobs! If any of you had a "REAL PAIR", you yourself would be running for all of these offices that you feel you know so much about! The reason Starke County has such a bad wrap is from all of your uneducated and off the wall assumptions...Keep in mind that assuming only makes an ass of you and me and we are all residents of the greater Starke County! Also, take a minute to think about how you would feel if your personal life was brought into your work life? Many times, the two have absolutely nothing to do with each other; therefore bringing it up on a blog is even more senseless! So, this is my word to the wise for all of you bloggers: If you are going to point fingers, make sure your hands are clean!!
