My name is Bryan Lloyd, this is my statement of events between what happened between Mark and Vicki Combs and my family leading up to and following my son’s death. I am writing this statement because I believe it is being asked of me by GOD.
I sold my home in Demotte, IN on land contract so that I could move back to the North Judson area to be closer to family. My home sold much quicker than I thought it would, only giving me two weeks to find a place to live in the North Judson area. I called an add in the paper about a home for rent for $800 per month. I met with Mark Combs the owner of the house for rent, he told me that the house was for sale but only one or two people had even looked at it in the last year. He told me if he sold the home I would have thirty days to move out. We also discussed if he did not sell the home before the people I sold my home to get their own financing that I would possibly buy the home from him. No one had lived in the house for quite some time before I moved it. That was obvious inside and out. The weeds throughout the whole yard were waist high or higher, and the leaves on the bottom deck were over three feet deep. The inside of the house had personal belongings, papers, and several bags of trash. The house was also infested with spiders, and black hard shell bugs I called water bugs. My wife and I worked hard for over three weeks to get the mess cleaned up. The pool was polluted with green water and had frozen and busted several parts to the pool. The cost to repair the pool was around $350 I paid out of my own pocket. The next couple months went fine with the exception that Mark kept trying to pressure me into buying the house. He dropped the price from $279,000 to $235,000 then I was told when I was ready he would drop the price more.
On July 13th 2007 me and my four year old son who was my oldest and named after me Bryan Lloyd were sitting looking on the internet for his birthday presents. He has loved Scooby Doo every since I can remember. I bid on stuff for him on E-Bay and bookmarked a few other things he liked on the web. My son Luke came down and him and Bryan went outside on the concrete part of the deck to play. I caught them playing with the water hose and made them turn it off, but let them continue to play in the water. A few minutes later they both came in soaked. I always made them take their clothes off by the door so that they would not drip water through the house. Bryan and Luke were running through the house naked and my Step son Tucker hollered at them to get cloths on, then he told me they were running around naked. I hollered from the basement area and told Bryan to go get some clothes on. This is something that normally happened at our house. Bryan was only a month away from his fifth birthday and had been getting his own cloths and dressing himself for quite some time. A few minutes later while I was sitting at my computer I heard the biggest bang. I thought that the china cabinet had fallen over. I ran up stairs to the Kitchen area and everything looked fine. I then ran up the stairs to Bryan and Luke’s Bedroom. Tucker had beaten me into the room and lifted the TV off of my son Bryan’s head, and all I seen was the dresser laying on him. I lifted the dresser off of him and lifted him to see if he was ok. I didn’t know the TV had landed on him and thought at first it was just something he could shake off. His body was limp, his mouth fell open where I could see his tongue was almost bitten off. There were no cuts or scratches, then all of a sudden blood was pouring out of his mouth, nose, and ears. He started choking on his own blood, I had Tucker call 911, as I turned his on his side to clear the air way. When I saw it was getting worse not better I picked him up and ran to the dining room area so that when the ambulance arrived they could get to him faster. I had to keep turning him on his side to clear the blood from his airways. Then he stopped breathing and his heart stopped. I started CPR, and Mouth to Mouth to save my baby. Just a few minutes later he was gone. I continued Mouth to Mouth and CPR until the ambulance arrived. When the first person from the Ambulance crew came through the door they just stopped stunned and looked at me like they were in shock. A second person had to scream at them to get them to help. Nobody can ever understand losing a child unless you have lost a child. The last breath my son had in his body was mine. I didn’t just lose my son, he died in my arms with no body to help me. There is no way to describe the feeling of knowing your four year old baby is dying in your arms and you don’t know what to do to save him. It took the Pulaski County Ambulance at least twenty eight minutes to arrive. They arrived the same time as the White County Ambulance Service which is the County Below Pulaski County, and I live on the furthest North West part of Pulaski County. There is an Ambulance station in North Judson only eight miles from their door to 7902 W 700 N where my son died. I was told that the Pulaski County Ambulance Service had a guest speaker is why it took so long for them to arrive. I don’t understand why Starke County was not called they are obviously the closest place to respond for help. My son was gone at least ten minutes before any help arrived. They waited for me to take a shower to wash the blood off of myself and get dressed before the ambulance left for the hospital. Then I was told there was still a chance that they could save him. I knew my son had passed before anyone ever arrived at my home to help me. Then while at the hospital, they kept coming and telling me that they were still working on him, implying that there was a chance he was still alive. A while later they came out and told me that he was gone. That is almost like losing him twice in a couple of hours. They let me go back to see my son just a few minutes later with a tube sticking out of his mouth and his hair spiked with blood. His body was ICE cold and his body was already becoming hard and stiff. My son died in my arms, his last breath was mine long before any ambulance arrived. It was all up to GOD. I knew before he died that he was going to die without help. I knew the second he died I felt him leave his body. I knew he was gone and not coming back. I still continued with CPR and Mouth to Mouth because I will never wanted to give up trying to save my baby. He had been gone too long for the ambulance or the hospital to bring him back.
The coroner and the police at the hospital still had not decided if they were going to make the area where my son died a crime scene where they would go in and take pictures of the area and the wife of the person I am renting the home from came to my home un-invited and un-welcome with a carpet cleaner to clean the blood from the carpet. My opinion which is pretty obvious she was more worried about the carpet being stained then me losing my son. She told my step son Tucker to get out of the house as she went through my personal belongings. Within 5 minutes of me returning home Mark Combs shows up and tells me to drain the swimming pool which I spent my own money to fix. Swimming was the last thing on my mind at the time. Mark Combs then called me on the 17th of July and told me I needed to get the blood stains out of the carpet he had someone who was coming to look at the house. I had been mentioned to Mark that there were a few things that needed fixed the main thing was the front door frame was rotted, and I could not lock the door. He called on July 19th and said he was going to come over and do some work to the house. I assumed he was going to repair the front door, but he came over while I was not home and cleaned the blood stains from the stairway and upstairs. When you rent a house from someone my understanding is it is your home If in some way you damage the house they have the security deposit and can take you to court to make you pay for any damages. You cannot understand how violated I feel by Mark and Vicki. The blood from my son was my responsibility to clean up. That was not just a red juice stain, that is where my son died.
A few days later I called Mark on his Cell Phone My words to Mark were I have a few things I really need to get off of my chest. I told him that he or his wife had no business in my house to clean it, that that was mine or my family’s responsibility that I felt violated. He replied with Obscene screaming saying that was his house and he would come in it any time he felt like it. That I was TRASH and that my family was TRASH. My Wife and her family was Trash. That all we had done since we moved in his house was Trash it, that we were dirty and nasty. I was told to get out of his house immediately. I told Mark that it was my house as long as I paid rent there and if he even looked up my drive way while I was still there I would kick his ass. Now I had lost my son, being personally violated and verbally attacked by the person I am renting from who is a preacher. I had to find a place to live and fast. I decided I wasn’t giving Mark another penny for rent. I knew the house was ten times cleaner than it was when we moved in and there was no way he was going to return my deposit. I figured he could keep my deposit for August 2007 rent. Trying to find a house took longer than what I had expected. There was not a lot to choose from in this area. I talked to mark the end of August and told him it was taking longer to get moved than expected. That the house would be cleaned and I would pay for whatever time I stayed into September 2007. He said that was fine. Then two weeks the bank I was going through to buy a home denied the loan because it was a Modular Home. I talked to mark again and was told to take my time. That sometimes he doesn’t realize how he comes off to people, if I needed to stay till the end of the month it wasn’t a problem. I told him I would call him and let him know and I would have the key and a check for the month If I was still interested in buying the house he talked to his bank and he would take $205,000 for it but couldn’t take any less the bank wouldn’t let him. At this point I have no faith or trust for Mark or Vicki. I found a house to rent, and figured once I was moved out I would call Mark have him meet me at the house look the house over to verify that there was no damage to the house and it was clean and have him sign off that the house was fine than give him his check. When It came time to start moving I had little help. My wife, kids and I were all sick. It was during the third week of September. I moved for three days by myself while sick, while my wife stayed home sick herself and taking care of the kids. I finished moving on Tuesday and My Wife Chris had to go back to work that Wednesday. We planned on going back to the house the following weekend to clean up. I spoke to Mark while I was moving myself and was under the impression that as long as I was paying for the whole month I had till the end of the month to get everything out and cleaned. Mark called my cell phone three to five times a day leaving messages while I was working. I never returned his calls because he was becoming irritating wanting his check before I had everything moved out and that wasn’t going to happen. Then I get a call from an unknown number, I was working so I didn’t answer it before it quit ringing. I checked my voice mail and there was a call from Vicki Combs Saying I didn’t deserve Children, that Mark was right my wife and I were trash. Before I finished listening to the end of the message, I got one of my guns, drove over to the house at 7902 W 700 N Winimac, IN called my wife and told her I was going to Kill Vicki. I drove up pulled in the end of the driveway. My mother and my wife kept calling trying to talk me out of it. Nothing they said was going to stop me. The only thing that stopped me from killing her is I thought no matter what I do it won’t bring my Bryan back, and a message that I have heard several times in church. I can’t remember what verse, what chapter but the story is about a man who loses his son, and he says my son cannot come back to me, I can only go to him.
I cannot tell you where I get my strength to move on day to day. I believe god has work for me to do here on earth and he gives me my strength. When my work is done here my greatest reward will be to be with my son again.
